Due diligence
Investors need Independent Assurance before committing to major infrastructure and building projects and that assurance must be maintained throughout their delivery. Where there is a tendency for project teams to develop an emotional attachment to the project as a result of long-standing involvement, "optimism bias" is a common pitfall.

Our team comprises practitioners with unrivalled knowledge, track records and reputations for asking the right questions at the right time. The answers provide our clients with unbiased, frank and clear-sighted appraisals of their project investments, the inherent and emerging risks.

Risk assessment
Our team has profound experience in risk management, both in real-time and in the bigger picture. All major projects face the challenge of integrating the needs and aspirations of many disparate players who inevitably see the project through their personal or corporate lens. Poor communication of perspectives and expectations is the most common root cause for project failure and for resulting disputes. However, "communication" is rarely seen on a risk register which in any event is often a notional exercise with limited influence on the project strategy.

Our approach is to consider risk in real-time and measure perceptions of risk across the project, placing practical communication front and centre.

PPP / PFI
PFI’s will be here to stay – with improved Contract Terms – the government infrastructure stimulus needs the funding – and more than 90% of PFI’s in the last 25 years have been successful and reasonable value for money, because they were structured carefully in respect of risk transfer, pricing, programme and O&M. Failures have been the direct result of inadequate due diligence and inappropriate Terms.

Our CIG team has extensive PFI/PPP experience to advise on new and existing projects.

Insolvency investigations
Construction and infrastructure projects rely on the continual performance of complex supply-chains.
The insolvency of a key stakeholder or member of the supply-chain can have a devastating impact on the operational and financial success of a project.

The CIG experts fully understand the risk of an insolvency event, and can provide practical and reliable advice - along with effective due-diligence to help avoid an insolvency event, mitigate the impact, and assist with any recovery strategies should such an event arise.

Mediation and Dispute Resolution

CIG has an enviable track record for timely and successful intervention using the full spectrum of dispute resolution procedures and processes.

We have top-level experience in:

  • crafting bespoke dispute escalation mechanisms for contracts;
  • advising on strategic negotiation during projects;
  • early intervention using negotiation and mediation;
  • chairing settlement meetings; and,
  • being appointed as mediators, adjudicators, arbitrators and as members of dispute resolution panels.

At any point during the lifecycle of projects, we have the blend of skills and experience to alert and advise participants on emerging disputes either jointly or separately. We are equally well placed to assist in strategy and preparation for any dispute resolution procedure, and for participants' attendance at mediations.
